Responsibilities

The Alto Section Leader serves as both a professional singer and a musical leader within the Chancel Choir. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing confident vocal and musical leadership for the alto section during rehearsals and worship
  • Supporting and encouraging volunteer singers within the section
  • Preparing assigned repertoire independently and modeling excellent ensemble singing
  • Leading and supporting congregational hymn singing
  • Occasionally leading sectionals and choir warm-ups
  • Singing solo repertoire as appropriate

Beyond these regular responsibilities, we value the individual artistry of our Section Leaders. Those who are interested may have opportunities to participate in or develop recitals, concerts, chamber music, and other creative projects within the broader music ministry of Highland Presbyterian Church.

Schedule

The Chancel Choir’s primary season runs from late August through mid-May, with Thursday evening rehearsals and Sunday morning worship each week. Section Leaders also participate in scheduled special rehearsals and services throughout the season, including Christmas Eve and Good Friday.

During the summer months, Section Leaders sing with the Summer Choir on Sunday mornings from June through mid-August.

The position includes approximately 108 compensated calls annually, including regular rehearsals and worship services as well as scheduled special services and rehearsals.

Compensation

$80 per call, representing approximately $8,640 in annual compensation based on the anticipated yearly schedule.

The position also includes eight paid vacation calls annually.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be an excellent ensemble singer with strong vocal technique, musicianship, and sight-reading skills. We are especially interested in a singer who enjoys making music collaboratively and understands that section leadership involves supporting the musical confidence and success of the singers around them.

A degree in music is welcomed but not required. Professional-level vocal and musicianship skills, reliability, preparation, and a collaborative spirit are most important.
